Hi, I'm Martyn

I know you have a lot of choices in who you read, so I know I have to earn your trust with every post I make. If you’re curious, here’s a little bit about me.

When I set out on my career I had no idea that I'd end up becoming a specialist at Excel. In 2003 I took a placement at IBM and was handed a stack of manual accounting processes which were just mind numbingly boring and inefficient. It was truly a waste of everyone's time.
At the time, I already knew a fair amount about Excel, but using it for creative problem solving was a new challenge. I was so frustrated that one lunch break I bought a book on Excel and taught myself how to use macros.
Within a few week's I'd automated away many of those processes, and some belonging to colleagues too. I knew whatever I did, that solving business problems with Excel was a straightforward way to make a lasting impression at work.
After graduating I found myself in the investment banking industry, helping the back office teams understand the data feeding from the trading floor. It was here that I gained a deep learning in Excel in a fast moving environment.

In 2007 I started teaching Excel to colleagues and friends, and in 2014 I launched my online video tutorials. I've now helped over 12,000 students improve their Excel skills!

Be honest:

  • Can you really use a VLOOKUPs to join data tables together?
  • Could you analyse 10,000 rows of data with a pivot table?
  • Could you speed up a repetitive process with VBA automation?
I started this site to dispel the myth that Excel is complex and technical by breaking it down into bite sized chunks - that's why the vast majority of the content you'll find on this site is completely free.

I take a different approach than most 'experts' out there.

Most Excel trainers' careers are solely in the training industry, meaning that over time they lose touch with the types of business problems that most Excel students need to learn to solve. Traditional Excel training can be dull and is often just a checklist of functionalities to cover.
I approach the issue of Excel training differently. Having worked in data analytics within the UK financial services industry for over 12 years, I've come across almost every type of real world Excel problem thinkable. From basic spreadsheet setup through to complex management dashboards and automated tools.
Bringing my experience to the classroom benefits my students - you get to experience real world problem solving using Excel, rather than simply learning what all the buttons do!

Now that you know a bit more about me, let's get started learning Excel today!
